Before the Day — Privacy Policy
Before the Day is built so that your inner life stays yours. There is no account, no login, no server, and no backend. The reflections you speak (turned into text on your device, with the audio discarded) and any notes you capture are stored only in the app's local storage on your iPhone. We — the makers of the app — never receive them, because the app never sends them anywhere. The only time the app uses the network at all is a one-time download of the on-device machine-learning models it needs to run; after that, it works fully in airplane mode. This policy explains exactly what that means.
What we collect: nothing is transmitted
We do not collect your reflections, your notes, your transcripts, or any personal information. Nothing you type or say is ever transmitted off your device. There is no account to create and no profile to fill in. There is no analytics, tracking, advertising, or crash-reporting service in the app — the app contains no code that uploads your content or your usage anywhere. Because there is no server, there is nothing for us to store, breach, subpoena, or sell.
On-device processing
Everything the app does with your words happens on your iPhone. Your spoken answer is transcribed into text on the device. The questions you see are selected and generated on the device. The app keeps a small derived "memory" — a short summary it uses only to choose good questions for you — and that, too, is computed and held on the device. Your reflections and notes are saved only in the app's local storage on your iPhone. None of this processing involves a server, and none of your content leaves the device.
Microphone
The app uses your iPhone's microphone for one purpose only: to capture your spoken answer to the morning's questions. Your speech is transcribed into text directly on the device while you talk, and the audio recording is discarded — the app keeps the text of your reflection, not the audio. The microphone is active only while you are recording an answer, and your voice is never sent off the device or to us.
Model downloads and network use
The one and only time the app uses the network is to download the on-device machine-learning models it needs to function: a speech-to-text model (Whisper, via WhisperKit) and a small on-device language model, fetched from public model hosts (such as Hugging Face or Apple). This is a one-time download of the model files themselves. It does not send any of your reflections, notes, transcripts, or personal data — the download only pulls the model files onto your device. Once the models are downloaded, the app works fully offline, including in airplane mode. The downloaded model files are stored on your device and are excluded from your device backups so they do not bloat them.
Data retention and deletion
Your reflections and notes are stored only in the app's local storage on your iPhone, and they remain there until you delete them or delete the app. The app's small derived "memory" of you is viewable and erasable at any time in the app's Settings. Deleting the app removes its local data and the downloaded models from your device. To be honest and complete: standard iOS device backups (iCloud backup, or an encrypted computer backup via Finder or iTunes) may include app data, just as they can for any app you install. Those backups are controlled entirely by you in the iOS Settings app, under your Apple Account and your iCloud or computer settings — the app itself never uploads your data to iCloud or anywhere else. If you do not want app data included in a backup, you can manage that in iOS Settings.
Children
Before the Day is a personal reflection tool intended for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children — in fact, the app does not collect or transmit personal information from anyone, because nothing you write or say ever leaves your device.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how the app handles data, we will update this policy and, where appropriate, note it in the app or its App Store listing. The defining principle will not change: your reflections stay on your device.
